AI Agent Costs: Price Breakdown, Market Rates and Running Costs
・ Employee Store Operations

Summary
The cost of an AI agent is not set by the agent's price alone. API fees for the AI model, fees for connected tools and your own staff time all add to it. This article explains the four cost components, pricing models, how to count token-based charges and how to keep running costs down.
Prices in this article were checked on each vendor's official pricing page on October 2, 2026. Prices are listed in dollars or euros and may change. Check the sources at the end for the latest details before you use them.
When you estimate the cost of an AI agent, count what you pay each month, item by item. You can estimate the cost of an AI employee the same way. This article does not give market price figures. Instead, it explains how to calculate costs from your own usage.
Costs fall into four parts: the agent, API fees, connected tools and staff time
- Agent: the price of the AI agent itself. It can be a one-time purchase, a monthly fee, or a setup fee plus a monthly fee
- API fees: charges for the AI model the agent calls, billed by usage
- Connected tools: fees for the runtime, such as n8n or Dify, and for linked services such as a CRM or social media
- Staff time: time spent checking the AI's output and handling exceptions
API fees and staff time are the easiest to overlook. Even at the same agent price, if the agent runs on your own API key, the AI model provider bills you separately. Before adopting an agent, confirm which costs exist and who pays them.
How to count staff time
Count staff time by multiplying the time to check one item by the number of items per month. For example, if each check takes 3 minutes and there are 200 items a month, that is 600 minutes, or 10 hours. During the trial run, also measure how long it takes to fix the AI's mistakes. If checking takes too much time, rethink the scope of work you delegate.
Pricing models: one-time, monthly, or setup fee plus monthly
| Pricing model | How you pay | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| One-time purchase | Pay once up front | What fixes and updates are covered after delivery. Whether API fees are charged separately |
| Monthly | Pay every month | What you get each month. How and when you can cancel |
| Setup fee plus monthly | Pay a setup fee first, then monthly | What work the setup fee covers. What work the monthly fee covers |
A one-time purchase has no recurring charge, but you carry the costs of keeping it running. A monthly plan's value depends on whether maintenance and improvements are included. Compare not only the pricing model but also what you get for the price.
How to count API fees (token-based billing)
AI model APIs are priced in units called tokens. A token is a small chunk of text that the model processes. Input (text you send to the AI) and output (text the AI returns) have different unit prices, and output is usually priced higher.
| Model | Input | Output |
|---|---|---|
| OpenAI gpt-6.1-sol | $2.00 | $10.00 |
| OpenAI gpt-6-luna | $0.10 | $0.50 |
| Anthropic Claude Sonnet 5.5 | $2 | $10 |
| Anthropic Claude Haiku 4.5 | $1 | $5 |
Even for the same model, the unit price can change with input length. OpenAI's pricing page lists separate prices for short context (input of 272,000 tokens or less) and long context (above that). For example, gpt-6.1-sol input costs $4.00 per 1 million tokens in long context.
Example calculation
Suppose each run on Claude Sonnet 5.5 uses 10,000 input tokens and 1,000 output tokens. Input costs 10,000 ÷ 1,000,000 × $2 = $0.02, and output costs 1,000 ÷ 1,000,000 × $10 = $0.01. That is $0.03 per run. At 1,000 runs a month, it comes to $30. This is only an example; actual usage depends on how you use the agent.

Why costs grow with AI agents
- When tools are used, tool names, descriptions and tool results also count as input tokens
- AI agents repeat a cycle of thinking, calling tools and reading results, so one request can call the model many times
- The same text produces different token counts on different models. Anthropic says Claude 4.7 and later models use about 30% more tokens for the same text
Anthropic's guide notes that autonomous agents tend to cost more. Include in your estimate how many times the model is called per request.
Cautions when reading market price figures
When you look at AI agent price comparisons or market rates, check what the figures include. A figure for the agent's price alone cannot be compared with one that includes API fees. If prices are set in dollars or euros, the yen amount also changes with exchange rates.
Before comparing, line up the following points.
- Whether the agent's price includes API fees
- How many runs, and how much volume, per month the price assumes
- Which model the price assumes
- Whether initial setup work and post-delivery fixes are included
Each connected tool counts usage differently. n8n Cloud is priced by workflow executions per month: on annual billing, Starter is €20 a month (2,500 executions) and Pro is €50 a month (10,000 executions). Dify Cloud Professional costs $590 per workspace per year and includes 5,000 message credits each month. For details, see n8n pricing.
You can count executions from how often a workflow runs. n8n's pricing page explains that running once a day comes to 30–31 executions a month, and running every 5 minutes comes to about 8,600–8,900 a month.

How to keep running costs down
- Pick a model that fits the task: Anthropic recommends Haiku for simple tasks, Sonnet for most production work and Opus for complex reasoning
- Use prompt caching: at Anthropic, input read from the cache costs 0.1 times the normal input price (except for some models)
- Batch work that is not urgent: Anthropic's Batch API gives 50% off input and output. OpenAI's Batch pricing is also listed at half the standard rate
- Cap the number of iterations: Max Iterations in n8n's AI Agent node defaults to 10. Dify's Agent also has a Maximum Iterations setting
- Cap spending: Anthropic lets you set a monthly spend limit per organization. X API also lets you set a limit in the developer console
Prompt caching helps when you send the same long instructions or documents every time. At Anthropic, writing to the 5-minute cache costs 1.25 times the normal input price. Anthropic explains that a single read afterward is enough to recover that extra write cost.
What makes costs spike
OWASP's “Top 10 for LLM Applications 2026” lists unbounded consumption as one of its risks. AI agents and tool calls can turn one request into many operations. As countermeasures, OWASP lists token-aware cost management, hard spending caps, per-agent kill switches and continuous cost monitoring.
Start with a small number of runs and record the tokens used per run. Estimate the monthly cost from that record before increasing the number of runs. How to measure results is covered in How to evaluate AI agents.
Reading prices on Employee Store
On Employee Store, AI agent prices are shown as a one-time purchase, a monthly fee, or a setup fee plus a monthly fee. Payments are processed through Stripe. You cancel a monthly plan from contract management in the deal room, which stops the next charge. There are no prorated refunds.
When you check a price, also confirm whether API fees or connected tool fees apply on top of it. After purchase, you can ask the seller questions through messages in the deal room. The purchase process is described in How it works, and the AI agents on offer are listed in AI employees.
FAQ
- How much does an AI agent cost?
- Costs vary widely with how the agent is built and how much you use it, so this article does not give market price figures. Calculate the four components for your own usage, the agent's price, API fees, connected tool fees and staff time, and add them up.
- How should I estimate API fees?
- Multiply the input and output tokens per run by the model's unit prices to get the cost per run. Then multiply by the number of runs per month. AI agents can call the model many times for one request, so do a trial run and record the actual token counts.
- What happens if I cancel a monthly AI agent partway through?
- On Employee Store, you cancel a monthly plan from contract management in the deal room, which stops the next charge. There are no prorated refunds.
