Automating X with AI Agents: Posting Rules and an n8n Setup
・ Employee Store Operations

Summary
When you automate X (formerly Twitter) with an AI agent, learn X's automation rules before you think about the build. This article covers what X's rules allow and prohibit, how to build scheduled posts in n8n, and the terms that apply when you expand to YouTube or a blog.
The rules, features and pricing in this article were checked on each company's official pages on October 2, 2026. They may change. Before you rely on them, check the latest information through the sources at the end.
When an AI agent runs your X account, people no longer have to draft posts or schedule them by hand. However, X has rules on automation. Automation that breaks these rules can lead to account suspension.
Social Media Tasks You Can Automate
Social media work splits into tasks that stay inside the company and tasks that reach the outside. Tasks that stay inside are the easier ones to hand to an AI agent.
- Collect material: pick up updates from your own blog and news
- Write drafts: turn the material into draft posts
- Schedule and publish: post at set times
- Summarize numbers: put the response to each post in a table
- Draft replies: write draft answers to replies on your own posts
Of these, posting and replying reach the outside. Protect those tasks with both X's rules, explained next, and human review. We cover automating material collection in How to Delegate Research and Information Gathering.
What X's Automation Rules Say
The X Help Center publishes the 'X automation rules'. The same X Rules that apply to user actions also apply to automated actions. The user is ultimately responsible for actions an app takes on their account.
Allowed
- Automated posts of outside content such as RSS feeds (when you have permission to post it)
- Automated posts that share information and follow the rules
- Automated replies to people who asked for them (with a way to opt out)
Prohibited
- Identical or nearly identical posts
- Automated posts about trending topics
- Automated replies to posts found only through keyword searches
- Automated likes
- Automation through means other than the API
From the X Help Center, 'X automation rules' (checked October 2026)
Means other than the API include scripts that operate the X website. Automating this way can get your account temporarily locked or permanently suspended. Bulk or automated unsolicited direct messages are also prohibited.
Automating someone else's account comes with conditions. You must explain to the account owner what actions will run automatically, get their explicit consent, and stop right away if they ask you to. If you run accounts on behalf of others, keeping these three points in writing makes them easier to confirm.
Conditions for Automated Replies
Automated replies and @mentions are allowed only when the other person asked for a message first. Examples include someone replying to your post or sending you a direct message. Following your account alone does not count as asking for automated replies. Provide a clear way to stop automated replies, and stop right away when asked.
X API Pricing
According to X's official documentation, the X API is pay-per-use. You buy credits in advance, and each request draws them down. Creating a post costs $0.015 per request, and creating a post that contains a URL costs $0.200 per request. You can set a spending cap in the developer console.
The X API also has per-endpoint limits on requests over time (rate limits). According to the n8n documentation, when you connect with OAuth2, app-level limits apply. Before you increase your posting volume, check both the pricing and the limits.
Scheduling and Automating Posts in n8n
n8n has an X (formerly Twitter) node. It supports creating and replying to posts, deleting posts, searching posts, liking, reposting, and creating direct messages. The node has a like operation, but X's rules prohibit automated likes. What a node can do and what the rules allow are two different things.
To connect n8n to X, you need an X developer account and an app. Authentication uses OAuth2. Choose app permissions to match the features you use. If you only post, do not grant direct message permissions.
- 1Schedule TriggerStarts at set intervals or times
- 2Collect materialUpdates from your own blog and news
- 3Draft with AIWrite draft posts
- 4A person reviewsWait for approval in Slack or similar
- 5Post with the X nodePublish only approved posts
Schedule Trigger is a node that runs a workflow at set intervals or times. You set it in seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks or months, or with a cron expression. The time follows the workflow's time zone. If none is set, it uses the n8n instance's time zone, and the default for self-hosted instances is America/New York. To post on Japan time, set the workflow's time zone first.
We explain how n8n connects to other services in How n8n Integrations Work.
Terms to Check When You Expand to YouTube or a Blog
You can extend posting with n8n to other social platforms and blogs besides X. However, each platform has different terms and API conditions.
YouTube
The n8n YouTube node supports uploading videos and creating and updating playlists. The YouTube Data API documentation says that videos uploaded from unverified API projects created after July 28, 2020 are restricted to private. To lift the restriction, the project must pass an audit of its compliance with the terms of service.
The YouTube API Services Terms of Service also require you to follow the developer policies. Apps that use the API must publish a privacy policy that explains what user information they handle. You must not exceed or work around usage limits (quotas).
TikTok
As of October 2026, TikTok is not in n8n's list of built-in nodes. To post, call TikTok's Content Posting API from the HTTP Request node. According to TikTok's documentation, posting requires approval of the video.publish scope. Posts from apps that have not passed an audit are restricted to private visibility.
Blogs
The n8n WordPress node supports creating, getting and updating posts and pages. It also works as a tool for AI agents. When you automate a blog, do not publish AI-written articles as they are. Set up the flow so a person reads them before they go live.
Human Review Before Anything Goes Out
OWASP's 'Top 10 for LLM Applications 2026' uses the example of an app that posts to social media and recommends adding a user approval step to the posting action. Actions that reach the outside are hard to undo.
Does the action reach the outside, and can it be undone?
Reviewers check for factual errors, repeated content, personal information about people outside the company, and what the links point to. X's rules prohibit posts with unrelated links and posting personal information without permission.
n8n has two features for adding human review. One is the Slack node's 'Send and Wait for Response', which sends a message and waits for a reply before moving on. The other adds human approval to an AI agent's tools. If approved, the tool runs; if rejected, it does not. Approval requests can go to Slack, Microsoft Teams, Gmail and more.

Employee Store's Social Media Category
Employee Store is a marketplace where companies can adopt AI agents built by developers. One of its categories is social media management. Pricing is one-time purchase, monthly, or setup fee plus monthly, and payment is through Stripe.
When you choose a social media AI agent, check which platforms' APIs it uses, whether it has a step where a person reviews posts before they go out, and who pays the API costs. After purchase, you can message the seller in the deal room. You can find listed AI in the AI employee directory.
FAQ
- Does automating X posts with an AI agent violate the rules?
- X's automation rules allow automated posts that follow the rules. Identical posts, automated posts about trending topics, automated likes, and automation through means other than the API are prohibited. Automate through the API, within what is allowed.
- Can n8n upload videos to YouTube?
- The n8n YouTube node supports video uploads. However, videos uploaded from unverified API projects created after July 28, 2020 are restricted to private. To make them public, the project must pass a YouTube audit.
- Can I publish AI-written posts as they are?
- We recommend publishing actions that reach the outside only after a person approves them. OWASP also recommends adding user approval to the posting action in apps that post to social media. In n8n, you can build a flow that waits for approval in Slack.
